President Luis Abinader announces at least 22 flights of the new-to-market low cost carriers Sky Cana and Eastern Airlines from John F. Kennedy and Newark international airports in the New York and New Jersey area to Santo Domingo and Santiago. The fares on these flights will not exceed US$500 round trip, including the taxes and free luggage. The President says the flights begin on 21 December 2021 and will operate through 11 January 2022. They are to facilitate Dominicans visiting to celebrate the holidays with their friends and relatives.
“For our government the Dominican Diaspora is a priority, and with this initiative we will be guaranteeing that around 5,000 Dominicans can come to spend Christmas with their families without having to pay out-of-standard prices,” said the head of state.
He said the government is working to foster an increase in airlines on the New York routes so more competition will drive fares down.
“I am also pleased to announce that all Dominicans will receive a refund of the $10 entry tax to the Dominican Republic. For which we have enabled a reimbursement system through the Tourism Cabinet, Tax Agency (DGII) and Banreservas for its implementation,” he added when making the announcement.
