All in the Family: Corruption charges presented against the Medina Sanchez clan

The Anti-Octupus Case with corruption charges against the Medina Sanchez family is 3,445-pages long. The file presents details of accusations of serious irregularities in government procedures with evidence obtained from documents recovered through government transaction investigations, raids on the suspects and audits by the new Chamber of Accounts.

The so-called Anti-Octopus Case (Operación Anti-Pulpo) has been assigned to judge Deiby Timoteo Peguero Jiménez. The file presents the scheme used by those close to former President Danilo Medina to accumulate incredible wealth in eight years, due to the “actions and ommisions” of the head of government, Danilo Medina Sanchez.

The President’s brother Juan Alexis, a major government contractor, is in preventive jail and his sister, Carmen Magalys (vice president of the Fund of Capitalized Government Entities – Fonper), is under domiciliary arrest. Other siblings mentioned in the case is former senator of San Juan de la Maguana Lucia and deputy administrator at the government Banco de Reservas, Aracelis. Also mentioned is Angel Milciades, another brother of former President Danilo Medina Sanchez.

Cases of corruption in government electrification divisions, numerous bribes, removing of people in government who were obstacles to business deals, milking the state to finance electoral campaigns, the renovation at the same time of 56 public hospitals with contracts benefiting relatives of the President’s family, use of military facility as storage for private business and numerous administrative decisions to favor the family of former President Danilo Medina are included in the extensive accusatory file. “Since 2012, with the ascension of President Danilo Medina to power, his brother, the accused Juan Alexis Medina Sanchez, concocted an association of wrongdoers made up of public officials and private individuals, which extended its tentacles through various state institutions,” the file says.

The file that presents accusations against 27 persons and 21 companies does not directly accuse President Danilo Medina of carrying out corrupt acts, but the former President is mentioned some 90 times.
