Colmado-owner accused of state fraud sent to prison

The judge of the Permanent Attention Office of the Judicial District of Santiago, Libertad Polanco ruled that Jose Antonio Santana Moronta, owner of the Colmado Moronta in La Canela, Santiago, serve three months of preventive custody in a Santiago jail. The Public Ministry charges Santana Moronta with committing a RD$18.4 million fraud against the state. The Public Ministry notified that the scam involved the social welfare programs “Comer es primero”, Pa ‘ti”, “Quédate en Casa” and others.

Santana Moronta is charged with violating Crimes and Crimes of High Technology Law 53-07. Santana Moronta is charged with illicit obtaining of funds and identity theft. The thefts occurred from 9 September to 8 December 2020.

The charges against Santana Moronta also include the crimes of embezzlement, criminal association, fraud against the Dominican state and breach of trust, described and punished in articles 166, 167, 169, 170, 171, 265, 266, 405 and 408 of the Dominican Penal Code (CPD).
