Over the Christmas and New Year holidays, 112 children were born at the Hospital Materno Infantil Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia, the leading maternity center in La Altagracia province. Its director, Bélgica Méndez, told Diario Libre that of the total 61 were foreigners and 51 Dominicans.
She told Diario Libre that most of those giving birth were young women, ages 19 to 22, but there were also some minors.
She said that the high birth rate at the La Altagracia hospital is due to the fact that there is a high rate of foreigners that do not use planning methods.
The Diario Libre article does not give the detail of the nationality of the foreign births. Most foreign births in the Dominican Republic are to Haitian nationals.
