The Ministry of Labor has confirmed that the Lady of Altagracia Day holiday will merge with the Duarte Day holiday forming a four-day long weekend from 21 to 24 January 2022.
Altagracia Day honors the Virgin of High Grace and is celebrated on 21 January every year. By agreement with the Catholic Church, religious holidays are not moved. Duarte Day honors the forefather of the nation, Juan Pablo Duarte. His birthday is on 26 January, but the Ministry of Labor announced it will be moved and the holiday will be on Monday, 24 January 2022.
This means that beaches and mountain area lodgings will be packed as people take advantage of the extra-long holiday.
The long weekend is also a good time to be in the cities for shopping and getting around. Traffic will be at a low.
On the other hand, provisions should be made for extra traffic as people leave the cities on Friday and Saturday, and return on the next Sunday and Monday.
