Puerto Plata skylift expected to be in service soon

Maintenance crews are at work in the installation of the new emergency cable at the Puerto Plata Cable Car. The emergency cable is to assist users in the event of a skylift service breakdown.

The cable was received on 15 January 2022, announced the administrator of the cable car operation, Atahualpa Paulino. He said engineers have begun the installation.

The cable car has been out of operation ever since on 23 May 2021 the skylift suffered a breakdown that stranded 32 people in the two cabins for several hours. Specialized crews from the Santo Domingo Metro, Civil Defense, Air Force and Fire Department worked together to successfully rescue the passengers that remained around 6 hours suspended in the sky lift cars.

The authorities of Puerto Plata said once the service is restored it will be included in the tours offered to thousands of cruise ship tourists that arrive to the Amber Cove and Taino Bay ports.

The Puerto Plata skylift was inaugurated in 1975. The cable car takes visitor to an idyllic botanical garden on the top of the Isabel de Torres Mountain. The views on the way are one of the main reasons for taking the skylift. The top of the mountain can also be reached along a less than a kilometer hike.
