Political parties discuss changes to Political Parties and Electoral Regime laws and 2015 Constitution

The reducing of the 50%+1 percentage needed to win in a first round of presidential elections was on the table for discussions during the round of talks under the Social Economic Council (CES). No one seconded the motion the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party presented in the meeting on 18 January 2022.

Spokespeople for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and People’s Force (FP) say that an alliance between them for the 2024 elections to remove the PRM from power cannot be ruled out. The People’s Force was born in 2020 after dissident members of the PLD followed former PLD president Leonel Fernández. Fernández disputed that followers of former President Danilo Medina had rigged the primary when the initial results showed he would be the presidential candidate. He decided to run in the election and did so on the platform of a minority political party.

Iraima Capriles, executive director of the Economic and Social Council (CES), said that the political parties are scheduled to hold seven meetings — 18, 20, 25 and 27 January, and 1 and 15 February. The conclusions will be presented on 1 March. The politicians are meeting to discuss the changes to the Political Parties and Electoral Regime laws and the 2015 Constitution.

The tentative date for delivery of the report on changes to the Political Parties, Electoral Regime and provisions in the Dominican Constitution regarding political issues, is scheduled for Tuesday, 8 March 2022.
