The San Francisco de Macorís team, Gigantes del Cibao won the Dominican Professional Winter Baseball Championship on Saturday, 22 January 2022. The Gigantes defeated the Estrellas Orientales in their homeclub in San Pedro de Macorís, 8-3. Marcell Ozuna (El Oso) made the difference. Ozuna batted a three-home run, the first of the Gigantes’ six-run rally in the third inning that would decide the game and the championship.
Ozuna was elected the “Most Valuable Player” of the playoffs. For the award, he received a large majority of votes. During the playoffs, he had hit three home runs and towed in eight runs. He ended with a batting average of .333.
The playoffs were scheduled to go to the 7-4 series, but the Gigantes finished it off in five games, only losing the Estrellas’ first game. The Gigantes del Cibao had won the regular season and the semi-finals.
This is the second time the Gigantes del Cibao win the championship. The first time was for the 2014-2015 season. The Gigantes have reached the playoffs in 2003-04, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2020-21.
The Gigantes will now represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series Santo Domingo 2022 that will be played at the Quisqueya-Juan Marichal Stadium starting Friday, 28 January through 3 February.
