Last week, a 12-person delegation from Qatar visited the Dominican Republic, and, in particular, the area of Pedernales. Pedernales is the country’s most southwest province. It is on the border with Haiti. It is slated for major development in lodging capacity.

According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the Qatar delegates were interested in Cabo Rojo/Pedernales area and the agricultural production of the Dominican Republic.

President Luis Abinader received the Qatar Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi at the Presidential Palace. Later, Vice President Raquel Peña hosted a formal dinner for the delegation at the Presidential Palace.

Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez says the large Qatar visiting delegation is a good sign of the interest the Middle East government authorities have in investing in the Dominican Republic.

Among the many meetings and side trips, like the one to Pedernales, the delegation also met with several Dominican ministers. The meeting with Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz Lopez was particularly interesting since the large production of fruits and vegetables in the nation’s greenhouses is certainly attractive to a country that is a desert peninsula off the coast of Saudi Arabia. As reported, there were talks of the possibility that the DR could become the hub for Qatar Airways for the Americas.
