
Manuel Azcona had taken coverage from the storm under a tree only to die when the torrential rains caused the tree to fall on him in Santiago. The Center for Emergency Operations has issued a yellow alert for three provinces and 12 provinces have green alerts.
The three provinces under yellow alert are Montecristi, Espaillat and Puerto Plata. The provinces under green alert are: Monte Plata, María Trinidad Sánchez, Valverde, Sánchez Ramírez, Samaná, Duarte, Hermanas Mirabal, La Vega, Santiago, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago Rodríguez and Dajabón.
The most damages caused by the heavy rains falling since the afternoon of Sunday, 30 January were in Valverde, Montecristi, Santiago and Puerto Plata. Some 3,444 houses were flooded, displacing 1,720 persons. More than 20,000 tareas (625 square meters per tarea) were flooded, affecting farm crops in the central Cibao region.
The Center for Emergency Operations reports more than 56,000 persons lost power service.
The cold front moving south from North America is driving low temperatures and torrential rains affecting the north part of the country primarily. The local weather service says the rains and chilly weather will continue.
