Dominican-built satellite to monitor sargassum

The Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (Intec) is working on the launching from the space center in Guyana of the first Dominican satellite. The satellite is built to monitor sargassum that affects Dominican coasts and beaches. The Ministry of Defense is collaborating with the creating of a Dominican Space Agency to represent the country before the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). UNOOSA is an organization in charge of promoting international cooperation in the use of space for peaceful purposes.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Defense after the meeting held with visiting Dominican NASA Space Engineer Scarlin Hernandez. Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa met with Hernández, together with the director of the Specialized Corps of Airport Security and Civil Aviation (CESAC), Major General Carlos Febrillet Rodríguez, the Dominican Vice Consul in Boston, Luís Rosario, and the Astronautical and Space Engineer Edwin Sánchez, from the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (Intec) to discuss the creation of the Dominican space entity.

Engineer Scarlin Hernandez was in the Dominican Republic to receive the National Youth Award for her professional achievements.
