Kids racing motorcycles in SPM

Young people continue to race motorcycles putting in danger their lives and that of others. Diario Libre reports on the motorcycle racing on the streets of the Santa Fe area of San Pedro de Macoris city (SPM). The informal racing is just one element in the daily total of between 2 and 5 traffic fatalities per day in the Dominican Republic.

The races are causing serious problems for the community. Curiously, the sonic disturbance seems to resonate more with neighbors than the very really danger to the participants and the onlookers.

The regional commander of the National Police has joined together with the local neighborhood groups and local churches to try and educate the kids to discontinue the racing. They have also increased patrols in the area. As a result, a large number of motorcycles have been seized and retained, due mostly to lack of papers, helmets, or proper lights.
