The Social and Economic Council has announced the beginning of it roundtable discussions on transportation issues. This comes on the heels of the announcement by the director of the National Institute of Transportation (Intrant), Rafael Arias who stated transportation and cargo fares are not going down due to the rising fuel prices. On Saturday, 5 February 2022, oil was quoted at over US$93, the highest in many years.
OMSA, the state-owned Metropolitan Bus Service, is interested in trying electric vehicles. Arias noted that he would present the roundtable with the Intrant’s proposals in a few days.
In the meantime, a proposal for a rail system between Santiago and Santo Domingo is again under study, with financing from Korean entities.
It is worth noting that the late well-known entrepreneur Jose Armando Bermudez (Popy) had a study and research done on this very topic over 35 years ago. Back then it was promoted on grounds that it would greatly reduce the amount of heavy vehicles on the nation main north-south highway, the Duarte, and thereby reduce fuel consumption, wear and tear on the highway, and costly accidents.
