Aerodom (Vinci Airports) is working on installing a Boeing airplane repair center encompassing an area of 300,000 square meters at the María Montez International Airport (BRX) in southwestern Barahona. The announcement was made during a Diario Libre interview with Monika Infante, CEO of Aerodom in the Dominican Republic.
The actual construction of the workshops will take 36 months and the investment is around US$200 million. Aerodom is working with FTS Holding on this very ambitious project. Boeing would be the exclusive client of the maintenance venture. New hangars, a ramp and a training center are in the works for the new center. The plan for the maintenance center contract should be finalized in the next 90 days and the construction is expected to begin this year.
The Barahona airport was built in the 80s when the development of Barahona as a tourist destination was envisioned. It was given the longest runway in the country. Nevertheless, Barahona never developed large hotels to support regular flights. The airplane had its heyday serving relief flights that arrived and departed following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
The Abinader administration now envisions the construction of 12,000 hotel rooms in the Pedernales area, but the Barahona international airport would be a two-hour drive away. The government contemplates the construction of a new international airport in Pedernales. Monika Infante of Aerodom acknowledges that the Barahona International Airport is a two-hour drive from Pedernales and thus too far to serve beach-coming tourists coming from long haul destinations. Infante says Aerodom is open to participate in the new Pedernales airport.
