The Ministry of Environment reports that since the start of the humpback whale-watching season 2022 on 15 January 2022, more than 35,000 people have taken the excursions in the Samaná Bay.
There is still time for whale-watching. The season ends on 31 March. During the 2021 season, 32,984 people took the authorized whale-watching excursions in the Puerto Plata and Samana observation areas.
The Ministry of Environment reported that for the first seven weeks of the 2022 season (until 11 February 2022), 35,685 foreigners and Dominicans had enjoyed whale watching.
The Ministry of Environment also reports the birth of seven whale calves in Samana Bay. In 2021, 18 humpback whales were born in Samaná.
The departure points for whale-watching in Samana Bay are at the Samaná pier, and piers in the eastern Hato Mayor and El Seibo provinces.
Between 2,000 and 3,000 humpback whales travel every year from the North Atlantic to the waters of the Caribbean Sea. The whales migrate from Greenland, Canada, Iceland and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary in Massachusetts, United States, to procreate and give birth in the warm waters of the Caribbean.
In addition to the whale-watching activities, the Center for Conservation and Ecodevelopment of the Bay of Samaná (Cebse) carries out scientific research.
