Spanish Constitutional Court president visits

President Luis Abinader received the visit of the president of the Constitutional Court of Spain, Pedro González Trevijano at the Presidential Palace on Monday, 14 February 2022. The Presidency has proposed major changes to the Dominican Constitution.

In the past decades, sitting Presidents have convened legislators to amend the Constitution to extend their terms in government. This is not the case this year. Contrary to the practice in previous years, the proposed changes do not touch the presidential term in effect since the Constitution was changed in 2015 during the last Leonel Fernandez presidency. That change enabled Fernandez to run again for office.

At the Presidential Palace, González met with Constitutional Court president Milton Ray Guevara, Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza and the legal consultant of the Executive Branch, Antoliano Peralta.

The Spanish delegation also included the Spanish ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Antonio Pérez Hernández y Torra; the secretary general of the Constitutional Court of Spain and the chief of staff, Andrés Gutiérrez and Antonio Luís Ramos, respectively.
