The ministries of Foreign Relations and Economy signed an agreement with the Dominican Municipal League to bolster international cooperation in cities and towns around the country. Signing were Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Alvarez; Economy Minister Miguel Ceara Hatton; and the Dominican Municipal League president, Victor D’Aza.
In a press release, the Ministry of Economy reports that in the 2022 National Budget includes 14 international cooperation initiatives for RD$477.8 million that will impact 13 municipalities in six provinces. The projects mainly target improvements in water and sanitation, risk management and rural development.
Economy Minister Ceara Hatton acknowledged that due to the lack of local development, Dominicans are forced to migrate, first internally between provinces and finally abroad. Ceara Hatton stressed the government is working so that the economic growth reflected in the gross domestic product (GDP) reach the provinces.
Foreign Relations minister Roberto Alvarez concurs. “One of the central objectives should be to achieve sustainable development in such a way that no Dominican would have to migrate, unless it is a desire, not a necessity,” he said.
The president of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), Víctor D’ Aza committed to draft the work schedule to implement the tripartite agreement.
