Parents between a rock and a hard place with schools

The fact is that legislators are trying to prohibit private schools from charging “annual registration” fees, known as “reinscripción” in Spanish and collected at the beginning of each school year. Universities charge a similar fee for each semester or cycle, depending on the institution.

In the case of the private schools, these have resorted to renaming or to financing the additional charge. In some cases, the schools charge the first tuition quota to ensure a place in the class, which is not refundable or transferable. The second tuition quota is designated to renew the child’s position at the school, in other words the “reinscripción.” Yet in other educational institutions the monetary weight of the standard fee is spread pout over the school year.

The legislation to ban the practice passed the Chamber of Deputies in December 2021 and now goes to the Senate for approval once the legislature reopens on 27 February 2022.
