Russia vs. Ukraine: impacting inflation and tourism in the Dominican Republic

More inflation with the rising of petrol prices and the direct hit on tourism from Russia and Ukraine to Dominican beach destinations are expected to be the first major effects in the Dominican Republic of the Russia vs Ukraine war.

Homero Figueroa, spokesperson for the Abinader administration stated: “The Dominican Republic cannot feel distant nor alienated since we are a net importer of oil, natural gas, soybeans, sorghum, wheat and corn, products that will reflect immediate price increases. In addition, we import from Ukraine 36.5% of the iron and cast steel we consume.”

The Presidency of the Dominican Republic criticized the invasion, taking side with the position of the United States. The acting ambassador of the United States in the Dominican Republic, Robert Thomas, applauded the Dominican government announcement.

On Thursday, 24 February, President Luis Abinader had released an official statement via Twitter:

“The Dominican Republic is shaken by the military invasion carried out by Russia against the Ukrainian people. This unilateral aggression violates the basic norm of peaceful coexistence among nations, putting all of humanity on edge.

“As stated by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, it is ‘a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, inconsistent with the principles of the UN Charter.’ This action is a sign that President Putin does not respect the political, cultural and territorial identity of the Ukrainian people when violating their internationally recognized borders and intervening in the internal affairs of that country, in blatant violation of international law.

“Seventy-six years ago, the nations of the world pledged in the Charter of the United Nations to ‘save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.’ Today, however, Russia has disregarded the entire international community’s historic and solemn commitment.

“We strongly urge the Russian government to withdraw its troops from Ukraine and return to the negotiating table to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

“Humanity deserves and expects peace, the world leadership should work for it.”

On Friday, 25 February, Dominican Ambassador to the Organization of American States, Josue Fiallo reiterated the appeal of the Dominican Republic, calling for a stop to the aggression, revoking of the declarations of independence of the separatist states and adhering to the Minsk agreements.

Meanwhile, the Dominican government is in contact with known Dominican residents in Russia and Ukraine. As reported in N Digital, efforts are ongoing to evacuate 20 Dominicans (15 adults and 5 children) that remain in Ukraine. The Ministry of Superior Education says that around 50 Dominican students in Russia are under scholarship plans. The Dominican embassies in Russia and Germany (concurrent in Ukraine) are leading these efforts.
