President retires 289 military; does not include those accused of corruption

When President Luis Abinader issued Decree 101-22 last week sending to retirement 289 military and police, he did not include the generals that are accused in several of the most important corruption cases in Dominican history, reports Acento. Both former head of the Presidential Security Corps (Cusep) Major General Adan Caceres of the Army and the head of the Touristic Security Corps (Cestur), Juan Carlos Torres Robiou of the Air Force, maintain their positions in the military. They are among several other high-ranking military and police that await trail in the Najayo Jail. The military are accused of crimes of corruption, money laundering, forgery, and appropriation of public property, among other charges.

A clause that would allow the military to be judged by special military courts was included in the most recent amendments to the Penal Code under study in the National Congress. The clause was included when requested by the incumbent Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa. Military courts are known for their lenience in judgements.
