The cable car that takes tourists to the botanical gardens on top the Isabel de Torres mountain in Puerto Plata is scheduled to reopen to the general public on Friday, 4 March 2022. It has been shut down for almost a year, after mechanical failures left suspended its 32 passengers from day to night on 23 May 2021.
After a meeting in Puerto Plata, Tourism Minister David Collado made the announcement of the cable car reopening. The Ministry of Tourism has delivered RD$25 million to the cable car board to pay for certifications and complete substantial repairs to the important attraction.
The cable car could have been restored to operation in a week’s time after the mechanical failure, but the operators decided to subject it to major overhaul and seek international certifications.
Cruise ship tours book their tourists for the excursion to the top of the Isabel de Torres Mountain and its botanical garden.
Collado said the land access road to the top of the mountain would also be improved. Restaurants are also being equipped to offer services to foreign and local tourists.
The Cable Car of Puerto Plata is located in the Isabel de Torres mountain. It has scientific reserve category with protected status due to its vast diversity.
During the same visit to Puerto Plata, Ministry of Tourism authorities and Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza, a former Puerto Plata senator, announced the government has allotted RD$900 million for Puerto Plata city improvements. These include RD$50 million for an arts and crafts plaza, RD$105 million to repair city sidewalks and rain drainage. Another RD$608 million is allotted to improve Sosua beach and access streets to the two Puerto Plata cruise ship terminals – Amber Cove and Taino Bay. There was also talk of works to improve Long Beach, the Puerto Plata city beach.
