Daniel P. Erikson meets with Dominican Minister of Defense

Minister of Defense Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Diaz Morfa met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Western Hemisphere, Daniel P. Erikson on 8 March 2022. According to a Ministry of Defense press release, the meeting was to discuss drug trafficking and border security issues.

Erikson serves in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and is responsible for US defense and security policy for the thirty-four nation region encompassing Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.

Drug trafficking, smuggling, border security and irregular migratory flows were some of the topics analyzed at the high-level meeting, which took place at the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cybersecurity and Intelligence Center (C5i) of the Ministry of Defense (MIDE).

The meeting reviewed the strategic, operational and tactical capabilities and resources of the Armed Forces of the Dominican Republic to address these threats and other illicit activities. The experience and contribution of the Dominican military to the containment of the pandemic caused by Covid-19 was also analyzed.

Erikson was accompanied by lieutenant colonels Greg Johnson, Defense attaché of the US Embassy, Abdiel Rosado, head of the Office of Cooperation and Security, and Major Jacob Mormon, attaché of the US Army.

Minister Diaz Morfa was joined by the general commanders of the three forces, Major Generals Julio Ernesto Florian Perez of the Army, Leonel Amilcar Muñoz Noboa of the Air Force and Vice Admiral Gustavo Betances Hernandez of the Navy. Also the officers of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and general directors of C5i and INSUDE.
