Tube TVs need decoder boxes to work starting 1 January 2023

Stores for years have not been selling analog TV sets, replacing these with smart TVs. But hundreds of thousands of these were so well made they are still in operation.

Those in the Dominican Republic that still use the analog television sets are being alerted that as of 31 December 2022, these will not work unless they have a decoder box. Hundreds of thousands of these TV sets are still in operation in low-income homes.

As of September 2022, the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications announces it will be carrying out the tests for the analogical blackout scheduled for 31 December 2022. As of 1 January 2023, TV transmissions will be only by digital signal.

Lawyer Cynthia Joa of Indotel, said on El Despertador morning TV show on Channel 9, that a survey is carried out to determine how many people need a decoder box to continue using their analog TVs. It is yet to be determined who will pay for the boxes. Digital converter boxes sell on Amazon for around US$40.

Digital conversion happened in the United States in 2009.
