Huge sums found in Haina in 2020 led to arrests in Santiago last week

The Operation FM took place last week with agents from several government agencies arresting at least seven persons during searches carried out in the Dominican Republic and the United States.

Here in the Dominican Republic it was revealed that this case was 18 months in the making, and it all began at the port of Haina Oriental in 2020. In late August 2020, agents from the National Drug Control Agency, together with agents of the Customs Agency seized the sum of US$2.3 million that were found hidden in three cases supposedly holding huge speakers. The money was all cash in small bills.

Just a week later, the same authorities discovered another similar sum of money hidden in the same manner. Both shipments were from Brooklyn, and delivered by the same courier company. The speakers were disguised as “household items” sent to different individuals.

According to reliable sources at the Justice Department, investigators began following the money, acting on this information. As a result, late last week, the authorities raided the Unico Car Detailing business on Rafael Vidal Avenue in Santiago de los Caballeros, arrested several persons, and seized over a million dollars, several hundred thousand Dominican pesos, a Ferrari and two Porches.

The Attorney General’s office has said that the accused will be arraigned on multiple charges of money laundering and requests will be filed for a long period of remand as the evidence is collected. Assistant AG Yeni Berenice Reynoso has told reporters that her office will request that this case be declared “complex” and thus have more time to prepare trial evidence.
