Major fraud in welfare agency

At least 30,000 Supérate welfare cards have been cloned in one go, says the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The prosecutors are investigating the fraudulent operation, assisted by the National Investigations Agency (DNI) and the Police.

Tens of thousands of beneficiaries of the Presidency social program have not received their respective subsidies due to the cloning of at least 30,000 cards in the southern region and the province of Santo Domingo in February 2022.

Gloria Reyes, the general director of the Social Program Agency told Diario Libre that so far the 30 thousand cards that were forged have been replaced and returned to the beneficiaries of the plan and the investigation process continues.

Reyes says this is the largest fraudulent operation ever affecting the government social program. She called it a systematized attack against the Superate cards.

A source linked to the investigation told Diario Libre that the hit could be 80,000 cards in total, but Reyes says the investigation is ongoing.

Those affected by the cloning are mainly in Azua, Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia, Pedernales and Greater Santo Domingo.

Last Friday, the National Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the raid of businesses in La Victoria, Villa Mella and San Miguel de Guerra, Santo Domingo Norte as part of the investigation.
