
Orchid lovers rejoice! This week, after a year’s hiatus, the Annual Orchid Festival (Festival de la Alegria) sponsored by the Dominican Society of Orchidology will again be staged at the National Botanical Gardens in Santo Domingo. The festival, which was not held last year due to the pandemic, will be open to the general public starting on Thursday, 17 March and will continue through Sunday, 20 March 2022. It will be open from 9am until 6pm.
This is the 39th year of the competition. The competitors need to deliver their orchids on Tuesday, and the judges will review the entries on Wednesday. The awards will be posted for the viewing public to see on Thursday. Judges will review the entries on Wednesday and make the awards.
The event is not only an orchids exhibition. It is also a flower show where orchid growers compete for ribbons and prizes. At the same time, there will be workshops and talks on the different aspects of growing orchids. Orchids and other flowers will be available for sale at lower fair prices.
Admission tickets are RD$200 per person for the event that will be held 17 to 20 March 2022 from 9am to 6pm. The ticket includes admission to the orchids flower show, the educational workshops and the botanical gardens shuttle. Extra parking will be available at the nearby INTEC university parking grounds with a bus shuttle every half hour.
