Norwegian Escape set to sail to St. Thomas

After running aground around 5pm on Monday, 14 March 2022 in the channel leading to the Atlantic Ocean from Puerto Plata, the Norwegian Cruise Line “Norwegian Escape” cruise ship is scheduled to set sail to St. Thomas on Wednesday, 16 March in the afternoon. After running aground the ship was moved shortly after midnight, Tuesday, 15 March back to the dock at Taino Bay cruise ship terminal in Puerto Plata city for assessing of damages made to the ship.

On Tuesday, the director of the Dominican Port Authority had reported: “After hours of work the cruise ship was finally unblocked, however it is necessary to inspect it in port to ensure that the structure of the vessel is in excellent condition to successfully continue its maritime route and reach its next destination.”

Specialized divers were contracted to inspect the ship. A Norwegian Cruise Line supervisor traveled to Puerto Plata to make the final call on the ship. The ship is set to depart on Wednesday, 16 March at 4pm to its next stop in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, passengers had extra time to discover Puerto Plata. Puerto Plata was the first stop of a Norwegian Escape seven-night Caribbean cruise that had departed Port Canaveral in Florida on 12 March.

The vessel was originally scheduled to visit St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands on 15 March, Tortola on 16 March and Great Stirrup Cay on 18 March before returning to Florida the next day.
