At times when food prices in the Dominican Republic are up 20.7% when comparing February 2021 to February 2022, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization will assist the Dominican Republic in finding compensatory mechanisms to be implemented by the Technical Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Sovereignty and Security (Setessan) of the Presidency of the Republic.
Rodrigo Castañeda, representative of the FAO in the DR, signed an agreement with Jaime Oscar González, deputy minister of Social Development of the Ministry of the Presidency (Minpre), to assist in the taking of measures to reduce the impact of the increase in the cost of the family food basket.
Castañeda said several regional countries are also applying measures ranging from fertilizer subsidies to import tariff reductions. He said these must be complemented with long-term public policies such as providing farmers with access to local markets, promoting short production circuits, while alleviating the burden that the high cost of food means for the vulnerable population at the present time.
