David Ortiz wants local judiciary to reopen his case

When David Ortiz was rushed to a clinic after being shot at an Av. Venezuela bar in eastern Santo Domingo in June 2019, there was much speculation in social media that Cesar Emilio Peralta, publicly known as the owner of several large night clubs in Santo Domingo, had ordered the shooting. At the time, people asked what was Cesar Emilio Peralta doing at the Abel Gonzalez clinic where Ortiz was taken for first emergency care.

After the publishing of the Boston Globe report with the former Boston Police commissioner’s findings that incriminate Cesar Emilio Peralta (El Abusador), the above speculation is again making headlines.

Weeks after the Ortiz shooting, Peralta was last seen celebrating at Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Punta Cana before leaving for Colombia. Meanwhile, the Attorney General Office in the Dominican Republic announced a major lookout for him in the mountain town of Jarabacoa. The shooting of Ortiz coincided with the heat on Peralta, after years of not involvement by the law enforcement, banking or even tax agency, despite irregularities in the operation that were later publicly known.

Now, N Digital says that with the findings revealed by the Boston Globe newspaper, the theory again emerges that drug trafficker Cesar Peralta had gone to the Abel Gonzalez clinic on Av. Abraham Lincoln where Ortiz was taken. There is speculation he went to finish off the former Major League Baseball player or to verify that his alleged order had been successful.

In several videos that circulated on social media back in 2019, El Abusador is seen hanging around the clinic where the legendary baseball player was taken with several men, among them the music promoter Jaque Mate. In one of the videos Peralta is seen talking with the also former baseball player Neifi Perez and immediately when a journalist approaches him, the drug kingpin removes himself from the cameras.

The report in the Boston Globe with findings of former Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis and former CIA agent Ric Prado indicates that the capo, who was extradited in December 2021 from Colombia to Puerto Rico, had ordered the murder of the former baseball player.

The Ed Davis report does not specify the motives that could have led Peralta to attempt against Ortiz. The capo was a neighbor of the former baseball player in a luxurious tower in Santo Domingo. As reported, Peralta felt disrespected by the former major leaguer.

While the first Police reports after the Ortiz shooting had indicated an unspecified person had put a bounty on the head of Ortiz, Cesar Emilio Peralta was not included in the charges. According to the information, the former attorney general Jean Alain Rodriguez instead tried to protect Peralta due to his alleged ties to Danilo Medina government officials. Peralta operated freely for years, running large discos and other businesses.

The attorney general and the Police eventually concluded that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and promptly closed the case accusing 13 men. Until now, Ortiz did not contradict the official version. Now in a statement, David Ortiz says he is the most interested in that the case be clarified. He stresses he was the victim.

“The judicial processes in this regard are open and we hope that they provide the clarity and answers that everyone, especially me, wants to know,” Ortiz said in a statement to the public.

He also expressed his “gratitude to the Dominican and US people for all the solidarity and support they always showed me during this difficult moment and always”.

Ortiz’s communications advisor, Joe Baerlein, said that “while David appreciates the thoroughness of the (private investigation) report, he expects further legal action in the Dominican and US courts to provide final clarity and answers as to why this happened to him.”

David Ortiz is also highly critical of the Dominican judicial authorities. “To be honest, when you live in a country where justice is corrupted, you want to believe what the government alleges, but at the same time you don’t agree with what they tell you.”

Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, now under Attorney General Miriam German Brito, indicated that they have initiated procedures to request formal access to the Ed Davis and Ric Prado report. NBC Boston reports that the Dominican judicial authorities under Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez did not cooperate with the private investigation.
