Easter Week: Religious tourism in Santo Domingo

San Lazaro Church / Diario Libre

Easter Week is probably one of the best times to visit the capital city of the Dominican Republic. The city empties out with Dominicans heading for beach and mountain resorts. Hundreds of thousands also leave to visit relatives outside the big cities.

The lull in the traffic makes the city more enjoyable. Large stores remain open with exceptions made by many, including Ikea, for Good Friday. Check for any changes in business opening hours.

The Colonial City of Santo Domingo also offers two outstanding events for those interested in Roman Catholic religion cultural activities — church walk and sacred music concert. The Thursday, 14 April 2022 evening religious walk is the time to visit the specially-decorated altars of the Colonial City churches. The churches are open until around midnight. The participating churches include in the Colonial City – Santo Domingo Cathedral, Las Mercedes Church, Dominican Convent, Regina Angelorum Church, Our Lady of Altagracia Church, San Miguel Church and San Lazaro Church. And on Good Friday, the Santo Domingo Cathedral choir offers a free concert to devotees at the Santo Domingo Cathedral.

Easter begins on Easter Sunday, 10 April, and ends on 17 April 2022.
