First immersive experience: Ivan Tovar exhibition

A first-time audiovisual art experience will open 6 April 2022 in an area of 550 square meters at the Plaza de España in the Colonial City. The innovative presentation of the works of surrealist artist Ivan Tovar will be the country’s first immersive exhibition. 3D and 2D projection technologies, lighting and sound effects will present the works of the late Dominican artist.

“So far, immersive exhibitions of world-class artists such as Goya, Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo or Monet have been held all over the world. Instead of bringing one of these exhibitions to the country, we wanted the first local immersive experience to be dedicated to what is probably our most universal artist: Ivan Tovar,” explained Héctor José Rizek, member of the Ivan Tovar Foundation.

“We are putting national talent first and celebrating this 80th anniversary of his birth as he deserves,” said Culture Minister Milagros Germán in making the announcement.

The exhibition will be open to the public for two months, until 6 June 2022.

For the creation of the projections and visual material, a selection of around 400 images, including works, letters and photographs, has been integrated into the immersive projection and audio content. This will allow visitors to navigate through the artist’s life and immerse themselves in his unique iconography.

About Ivan Tovar
Tovar is the Dominican painter with the highest international billings. In March 2020 his painting “The Threat” was auctioned for US$250,000 at Sotheby’s.

It is expected that the exhibition “Tovar Surrealismo Vivo” can later be taken abroad to promote Dominican art.

Tickets to see the exhibition will be sold online. They will cost RD$250 for adults, while children, students. People over 65 can purchase tickets for RD$100.

To prepare for the exhibition, as of 28 March, an exhibition with a large selection of drawings by the artist will be open to the public at the Museo de las Casas Reales, adjacent to the Plaza España in the Colonial City.

The Ivan Tovar exhibition adds to the attractions of the Colonial City during the Easter Week. Other events scheduled for the Holy Week holidays are the Easter Thursday late evening church walk and the Good Friday Santo Domingo Cathedral sacred music concert.
