The director of the Santo Domingo Metro downplayed the delays in repairing electric stairs in several subway stations. Rafael Antonio Santos director of the Opret, the Metro office, says that the electric stairways are now 13 years old and operate 16 hours a day and constantly need maintenance. He says the system has 212 electric stairways.
Diario Libre reported that the electric stairs of the Pedro Mir and Maria Montez stations of the Santo Domingo Metro Line 2 have more than a week out of operation. This obliges people who do not want to wait for the elevators to take the stairs.
