The Presidency announced three days of mourning for the death of former First Lady Rosa Gomez (Doña Rosa). Gomez was First Lady when Hipólito Mejía was president (2000-2004). She died due to a heart attack on 21 March 2022. Gomez is also the mother of capital city mayor, Carolina Mejía who is the secretary of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
The official mourning days are 22, 23 and 24 March 2022.
Presidential decree 132-22 instructs the Ministry of Defense to render the corresponding military honors to the prominent Dominican citizen during the funeral.
The same decree orders the national flag be flown at half-mast in military precincts and public buildings throughout the country.
The former First Lady is scheduled to be buried at the Cementerio Jardin Memorial in northern Santo Domingo as of 10am on Wednesday, 23 March 2022.
