Abinader: There cannot be development without quality education

President Luis Abinader announced yesterday his government’s strong support to the National Education Pact signed in 2014. Abinader said the great challenge of these pacts is the implementation, but that with good management consensus can be reached to achieve better results.

He remarked the education sector was the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and his government is committed to make up the time. He urged all sectors to come together to improve the quality of Dominican education at the pre-university, university and technical-professional levels. He stressed the importance of constantly assessing the actions taken to see if these are the right ones or not. He called for better education and says the advances so far are not enough.

President Abinader was accompanied by Vice President Raquel Peña, the coordinator of the Social and Economic Council, Rafael Toribio and the Minister of Education Roberto Furcal for the 13th Plenary Assembly of the National Pact for Educational Reform 2014-2030 held at the Presidential Palace. During the meeting, the progress and achievements obtained so far in pre-university, university and professional technical matters were presented.

“We have to try to win back that space and all that lost time. We have to make a plan to recover it in the right way. I reiterate that our government is committed to the Education Pact, but the great challenge of these pacts is the implementation,” he said.

In his words during the presentation, the President acknowledged partisan politics can be an obstacle to advances in the education sector. “Evidently, and with this I do not want to blame anyone or any government or any sector, but we should have advanced more. What is the reason; well, we will look for it, but we will correct it and do it with a patriotic sense where we are rational and sensible. Politics will never be aside, but we have to discuss it as we should, with firmness of the positions of each one, but at the same time, with prudence, rationality and respect, and we are going to work for this to be so”, he expressed.

The government has announced plans to institute a new management model for educational centers. There are plans that call for more bilingual programs, vocational training and polytechnics.
