Dominican Republic sees trade opportunities through Uzbekistan

Dominican ambassador Hans Dannenberg and Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov

The Dominican ambassador concurrent to Uzbekistan, Hans Dannenberg Castellanos sees many opportunities for Dominican exports connecting through Uzbekistan, a country in Central Asian country.

“We see Uzbekistan as an expanding economy that presents us with many opportunities,” he said in an interview during the International Investment Forum, which is being held from March 24-26 in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan and the largest city in Central Asia.

Dannenberg Castellanos explains that Uzbeks export to Russia almost US$60 million annually in fruits, dominating many of the distribution networks for these products. “We are working for Uzbek fruit traders and exporters to complement their offer in Russia with Dominican tropical fruits, especially mango, avocado and pineapple, as these items are not produced in Uzbekistan,” he said as reported in Sputnik News.

Uzbekistan is one of the world’s leading producers of cotton and a significant number of Uzbek companies are engaged in the manufacture of textiles, said the diplomat while affirming “that there may be opportunities for investment, cooperation and exchange of best practices at the level of manufacturing companies in our countries”.

Both countries could collaborate in “the development of responsible mining industries, specifically in the extraction of gold”, he said, since this precious metal represents 45% of Uzbek exports and 22% of Dominican exports.

The International Investment Forum is a platform to strengthen and concretize these relations, and to “present the Dominican Republic as a country with unparalleled and strategic logistical capabilities in the center of the Western Hemisphere, just as Uzbekistan is in the heart of the Central Asian space,” the ambassador assured, as reported in Sputnik News.

The announcement is made at a time when Dominican exports to Russia are seriously affected by the cancellation of the dozens of flights that were bringing tourists to Punta Cana, La Romana and Puerto Plata.

Uzbekistan is surrounded by five landlocked countries: Kazakhstan to the north; Kyrgyzstan to the northeast; Tajikistan to the southeast; Afghanistan to the south, Turkmenistan to the south-west.
