
The Tuberculosis Program at the Ministry of Public Health reports over 3,000 active cases of the lung disease in the country. TB mortality rate in the Dominican Republic is at 1.8%, over twice the rate of the Covid-19 virus. If the person has any co-morbidities, the mortality rate climbs to 2.2%.
So far, in 2022, officials have identified 548 persons with the infection. For World TB Day, Thursday, 24 March 2022, the Ministry of Public Health announced a program to eradicate TB in the Dominican Republic by 2025.
The authorities say that many cases have been reported with TB variants that are resistant to all but the most expensive antibiotics that most people cannot afford.
