President Luis Abinader announced the Dominican Republic has broken the US$12 billion export mark. “This is the change, the profound transformation in all sectors of the country in favor of the sustainable and continued development of the Dominican Republic,” said the head of state during the presentation of the National Plan for the Promotion of Exports (PNFE) 2020-2030 at the Presidential Palace on Monday, 29 March 2022. Exports were US$12,483.3 million in 2021.

“I take this opportunity to extend a proposal and invitation to the private sector to continue accompanying us in our journey. Part of the success of this plan rests on the oversight, monitoring and active participation of each of you, with work and the unwavering will that characterizes us,” said President Abinader.

The executive director of the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana), Bibiana Riveiro pointed out the significant increase of 21.1% in exports of goods by 2021, exceeding the proposed goal by 105%. She highlighted the increase in exports is “a milestone never before experienced in the history of Dominican exports.”

Riveiro explained that this translated into a more than 20% increase in per capita exports and the expansion in goods exports as a share of the economy as measured by GDP increases to 13.21%. “That share was 5% higher than in 2019, before the health crisis,” she said.

The breakdown is a 21% increase in national exports, 22% in free zone exports, 7% in agricultural exports, 8% in mineral exports and 26% in manufactured goods exports.

Exports of small and medium-sized companies increased by 106%, equivalent to an additional US$27 million.
