The Lost City is a boost for Dominican tourism

Movies are a wonderful way to promote travel. This is now the case of the romantic comedy, “The Lost City”, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum that was shot at several locations in the Dominican Republic. The action-adventure comedy that premiered in March debuted in US and Canadian theaters turning in more than US$31 million on its opening weekend. This is more than “Batman”.

The official movie description states:
Brilliant, but reclusive author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) has spent her career writing about exotic places in her popular romance-adventure novels featuring handsome cover model Alan (Channing Tatum), who has dedicated his life to embodying the hero character, “Dash.” While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who hopes that she can lead him to the ancient lost city’s treasure from her latest story. Wanting to prove that he can be a hero in real life and not just on the pages of her books, Alan sets off to rescue her. Thrust into an epic jungle adventure, the unlikely pair will need to work together to survive the elements and find the ancient treasure before it’s lost forever.”

As the film premiered this March 2022 in the United States, the media is zooming in to the scenic locations of the mysterious island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that the media is telling is the Dominican Republic.

When the actors enjoy working at a site, they are likely to share the moments on and off site with their fans on social media. This occurred last year with Jennifer Lopez and Shotgun Wedding. It has happened during the filming of The Lost City. During production and after the release of the movie, Tatum shared behind the scenes pictures and footage of his time with Bullock on set in the Dominican Republic. In May 2021 he shared an image of himself posing with Bullock as they’re waist-deep in a river. This was the first look their fans had at The Lost City, or The Lost City of D, as it was called at the time.

Mainstream media is also covering the story on the real life locations of the movie. Newsweek says that “the real life location is perhaps even more scenic.” Newsweek reports: “The movie is out in theaters now and anyone who’s watched the romcom adventure may come away wondering which real life location was used to portray the mysterious island and the titular lost city.”

Newsweek speculates The Lost City filming locations were in Samana, Santo Domingo and Casa de Campo (La Romana). It explains that some parts of the movie, including the underwater sequences, were shot on the UK-owned Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios in Juan Dolio, San Pedro de Macoris. Newsweek mentions other scenes were filmed at the Waterfalls of Bayaguana, Monte Plata.

Newsweek highlights how the Dominican Republic has been used for a number of big budget movies in the past including M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and multiple seasons of the TV show Survivor.
