
According to a press release from the coal-fired power plant, Unit I of the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Central (CTPC) will be out of service for 45 days as of 28 March 2022. The CTPC announced the power plant is shut down for its annual programmed major maintenance. Unit I is one of twin units that each with the capacity to generate 376 megawatts.
The CTPC was the main generator of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) in 2021, despite the inconveniences in the supply of coal and technical failures that affected the plant during the past year.
Diario Libre reports that the CTPC power units generated 23% of power sent to the national grid (SENI) in 2021. According to SENI statistics, this was equivalent to 4,453.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of the 19,431.1 GWh generated in the country in 2021.
