President Luis Abinader was in Santiago on 30 March 2022 to officially start construction works for the Santiago Monorail. The mass transit system will be 15 kilometers long and will have the capacity to transport 40,000 passengers per hour.
The mass transport service will benefit around 500,000 people that live in the barrios of Cienfuegos, Ensanche Mella, Ensanche Espaillat, Villa Liberación Cuesta Colorada, Gurabito, Nibaje, Pekín. The monorail service will also have a stop in the historic center of Santiago where riders will be able to connect with the Santiago city cable car.
The Santiago Monorail is the second mega transport work contracted by the Abinader Administration. The first was the extension of Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro from Km 9 to Los Alcarrizos.
The project is handled by the Oficina para el Desarrollo de Proyectos de Movilidad Urbana e Interurbana.
