Ambassador Puig with Kerala University vice chancellor Mahadevan Pillai

The Dominican Embassy in India is working to open up new opportunities for student exchanges and joint academic research between the Dominican Republic and India. Dominican Ambassador David Puig says the embassy has been actively reaching out to academia in both countries.

“We have been losing out as a country of the valuable opportunities to have ties with high-level universities in India to develop student and teacher exchanges and ongoing research. Both in DR and India there is an interest to develop these new international ties. We have spoken with several universities and they are all interested in developing their international exchange departments and connecting with universities in India,” he told DR1 News.

The talks are for student-faculty exchanges, twinning programs and joint research projects in topics related to IT, engineering, management, biotechnology, nanotechnology, among others. Bianca Baez, first secretary at the Dominican Embassy in New Delhi, India is assisting in coordinating the efforts.

Ambassador Puig last week was in Kerala in southern India to meet directors at three universities that showed interest. “The commonalities between Kerala and the Dominican Republic offer promising possibilities for the academic communities of both Kerala and Dominican Republic to engage in fruitful dialogue and research,” said Puig.
