Looking for who will renovate Las Damas and Mercedes street sidewalks

The Ministry of Tourism that oversees the US$90 million phase 2 Colonial City renovation program has launched a tender for improvements of sidewalks for the Las Damas and Mercedes streets.

The Ministry of Tourism and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) that is funding the initiative launched an international public bidding process for the rehabilitation of public spaces in the streets prioritized within the framework of the Integral Tourism and Urban Development Program of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo (PIDTUCCSD).

This tender represents a comprehensive recovery of some 4,700 meters of street sections, at an estimated cost of US$24 million. This intervention is projected to last 30 months, starting at the end of this year.

The rehabilitation works will be executed simultaneously in two lots: one starts on Las Damas Street, in a south-north direction, and a second lot will start on Las Mercedes Street, from Hostos Street to Palo Hincado Street, in an east-west direction.

These improvements include the undergrounding of electricity and communication networks and replacing drinking water, sewage, and rainwater networks. They also include the visual and functional transformation of vehicular and pedestrian circulation surfaces, with the renovation of paving materials and street furniture.

The project will add 10,000 square meters of sidewalks to the Colonial City. Visual pollution will be removed to stimulate the architectural appreciation of the historic center, for the enjoyment of its inhabitants and visitors.

An Urban Mobility Plan for the Colonial City is now in place to implement more sustainable travel modes, such as walking, bicycles, and efficient electric public transportation, compatible with economic growth, social cohesion, and environmental protection.

Bidders interested in participating in this international tender can obtain information on the bidding process through the Coordination Unit of the Integral Program for the Integral Tourism and Urban Development of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo at adquisiciones_ucp@mitur.gob.do and by calling 809-545-1548 extension 7370 and 7372.

The Ministry of Tourism is the Executing Agency of the Program, acting through the Program Coordinating Unit (UCP) and in coordination with the City Council of the National District and the Ministry of Culture.
