The director of the National Health Service, Mario Lama, says that Covid-19 is not a public health hazard in the country. Cases were down to 14 for the Covid-19 #753 bulletin (10 April 2022 deadline) with 62 active cases. Only 35 patients are hospitalized nationwide for Covid-19 and only 13 are in Intensive Care Units (ICU).
Yet, Dr. Lama says the medical authorities are very alert for a resurgence of the virus. He calls for the population to continue to take preventive measures. This Easter holiday hundreds of thousands of people will be gathering, which could result in new spread if the aggressive variants enters the country. Dr. Lama says the hospital Covid-19 network has not been dismantled as the country is prepared for a rebound of the virus due to the new variants under observation, among them the XE.
As reported in Listin Diario, Dr. Lama said that this Easter Week there are no restrictions regarding Covid-19. But people are urged to act with prudence and restraint to avoid diseases, alcohol consumption and traumas due to traffic accidents.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been observing a new Covid-19 variant of interest called XE, which could be the most contagious. XE would be the combination of the original omicron variant (BA.1) and the BA.2 subvariant, also called “silent omicron”.
In view of this reality, specialists have recommended the country to continue surveillance, genome sequencing and active search for cases of the new coronavirus.
Dr. Lama said that the variants have been weakening so far, without major complications for the patient.
Recently, the city of Philadelphia in the United States reinstated mask requirements for dining indoors after the surge in cases of Covid-19. Shanghai in China is again in lockdown after the spread of cases. Likewise, the XE variant, the combination of omicron and BA.1 and BA.2 strains, was said to be spreading in the United Kingdom, 1,125 cases were reported on 12 April.
