On Holy Friday, the day that remembers the crucifixion of Jesus, the Roman Catholic Church here in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere traditionally reflects on the words spoken by Jesus on the cross. This is the basis for brief sermons regarding pending issues in the country.
During this year’s Sermon of the Seven Words, the prelates took on some major issues and spoke quite clearly. Abortion, poverty and those who feast on public funds were addressed first as part of the reflection on the words “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.”
The Catholic Church also put the government on notification regarding public safety, social security, and economic stability.
The priests also criticized those who carry out negative actions to seek fame on social media and the lackadaisical work ethic of many government employees whose simple mistakes or laziness costs taxpayers time and money.
