
As of bulletin #3 issued on Sunday, 17 April 2022, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) had reported 26 fatalities from traffic or drowning. In 2021, there were 25 fatalities. A fourth wrap-up bulletin is expected to be issued on Monday, 18 April.
As headlined by the El Caribe newspaper, upwards of 48,000 volunteers were active in the “Life Awareness” vacation safety campaign. Over the past five years, about 100 persons have lost their lives to different causes.
As in previous years, the majority of traffic accidents, injuries and fatalities are related to motorcycles.
Nevertheless, Easter Week started early with 19 persons injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Autovía del Este on Easter Wednesday near El Tamarindo, east of Boca Chica. A truck loaded with construction materials, a Hyundai Tucson and a truck transporting baseball academy students collided. Most of the injured were taken to the Dario Contreras hospital in Santo Domingo.
Diario Libre reported: Witnesses to the incident said that “a lady on board a SUV that was leaving the Parador El Tamarindo in Boca Chica was hit by a truck full of gravel that was coming at high speed on the eastern highway. Another truck, that was parked full of baseball prospects, then was impacted. The accident caused a major traffic jam, affecting thousands that were on their way to vacation in the eastern vacation places. Of the 19, 16 were discharged, yet three suffered serious wounds.
This year, feminicides, nevertheless, made the most headlines over the religious holiday. On Easter Monday, in Moca, Espaillat, a woman was killed by her spouse. A jealous man stabbed the mother of his former spouse to death and injured his stepson in Santo Domingo East. The media reported on the femicide of a 15-year old by her spouse in San Cristóbal. In Puerto Plata, a 23-year old and her mother were murdered by her former spouse. Likewise, the 26-year old spouse of a 16-year in Puerto Plata would murder her and then commit suicide.
