Heavy rains cause flooding

The heavy rains falling over much of the country will continue at least through Thursday, 21 April in most of the Dominican Republic. The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) closely monitors the effects of a trough that is bringing the heavy rains.

The COE increased to 15 the provinces that are being impacted by the heavy rains. Provinces under yellow alert are: Hato Mayor, La Vega, Santiago, Monseñor Nouel (Bonao), María Trinidad Sánchez (Nagua), Monte Plata (Yamasá), San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo and San José de Ocoa. A green alert warning has been issued for: El Seibo, Sanchez Ramirez (Cotuí), Barahona, Pedernales, Santiago Rodriguez and Peravia.

The trough covers most of the national territory and is causing heavy downpours, thunderstorms and wind gusts. The rains are forecast to continue for at least another 48 hours.

Diario Libre reports that the heavy rains were the excuse used for students who did not show up for classes on Monday, day one after the Easter vacation week. Many private schools had scheduled the restart of school for Tuesday, 19 April. The COE reported that as of noontime on Monday, 18 April 2022, 25 aqueducts were affected and of these 22 are out of service due to the heavy rains.
