Carnival parade for 1 May

The National District has scheduled the Santo Domingo Carnival Parade for Sunday. The parade would have been held the first Sunday in March. It was suspended due to the Omicron spike in Covid-19 cases. The parade will now kick off on the west end of the Caribbean-sea fronting Malecon at around 3pm on Sunday, 1 May 2022.

The Mayor’s Office organizes the carnival in coordination with the Union of Carnavaleros of the National District (Ucadi). More than 80 floats and dancing groups sponsored by neighborhoods, companies and cultural groups will showcase the diverse cultural expressions of the Dominican people from all around the country.

Deputy Mayor and president of the Carnival 2022 Committee, Stalin Alcántara announced the new carnival date during a press conference held at the Fray Antonio de Montesinos Monument. Also present were Lucilita Matos, in charge of cultural affairs for the city government; the president of Ucadi, William Garcia, and sociologist Dagoberto Tejeda. Tejeda spoke about the origins of the Dominican carnival and emphasized that the main character in this celebration will be “Calife.”

The parade this year is dedicated to Marcos Antonio Keppis, who was head of the Alí-Babá’s dancing groups, creator of numerous floats and dance groups, and co-organizer of several carnivals and king of the carnival in 2015. He has also represented the country in the carnivals of Guadeloupe, Aruba, Curaçao, Cuba, St. Martin, Haiti and France.
