PRM councilors motivate ruling for increased personal benefits

The secretary general of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Carolina Mejía says she does not agree with a proposal that would put in place government wages for life for city councilors. Mejía is also the mayor for the National District, the capital city.

The wages for life scheme was recently denounced by city councilor Mario Sosa. “
We are tired of politicians that use their power for their own benefit,” said Sosa. The proposal goes to the floor for a vote in an ordinary session of the National District councilors on Wednesday, 20 April 2022.

Sosa said the president of the Councilors Board, a high-ranking PRM member, is promoting the new ruling so that anyone who presides the board for two years or has been a councilor for three periods will receive a life wage as a permanent advisor to the entity. The incumbent president of the board is Elías Reynoso, of the PRM. He would be the first to benefit.

Sosa complained that the proposed ruling does not incorporate transparency measures that would oblige the transmitting of the councilor sessions while mandating that the councilors need to wear suit and tie to attend the sessions.

Diario Libre reports that the National District has 37 city councilors of which 27 are members of the ruling PRM, 13 belong to the PLD and one to the PRSC. That is, the ruling PRM party has majority to pass the ruling with the new privileges.
