Dominican pilot dies in plane crash in Haiti

Preliminary police and media reports are of seven people dead and five injured in the crash landing of a small plane on Wednesday, 20 April 2022 before 4pm on a busy street in Carrefour, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Those on board the plane died, the driver of the truck with which it collided and a passing motorcyclist. Five passengers in the truck were injured.

The Dominican pilot was identified as Amado R. Gutierrez, as reported in Le Nouvelliste newspaper. The pilot survived the crash, but died later at the hospital where he was taken. The newspaper reported that Gutierrez was carrying an identification card of the Dominican pilot academy Entrenamientos Aeronáuticos Las Américas (Enalas).

The Cessna-207 with five people on board, the pilot and four others, was heading to Jacmel, in the south of the country, according to data provided by the National Civil Aviation Office (Ofnac) to local media.

When attempting an emergency landing due to engine failure, the aircraft is said to have collided with a truck traveling on Route des Rails, one of Carrefour’s main streets.

Officials of the National Office of Civil Aviation (Ofnac) told Le Nouvelliste newspaper that it was a private flight and that the aircraft did not have a commercial license.

Private flights in Haiti have increased after gangs control the roads to and from Port-au-Prince.
