Book Fair opens in Colonial City

Despite the difficult start on Friday, 22 April 2022 due to the heavy rains, the Santo Domingo International Book Fair is now happening in the Colonial City. The fair continues through 2 May. Venues are sprawled all throughout the Colonial City and activities take place 9am to 9pm with free admission.

With the slogan “Come to the book”, the literary festival is dedicated to Dominican authors Pedro Peix and Carmen Natalia. The European Union is the guest of honor.

Culture Minister Milagros German, the director of the Ministry of Culture book fairs division, Joan Ferrer and the European Union ambassador Katja Afheldt cut the ribbon to open the fair on Friday evening.

In her keynote address for the opening, Culture Minister German highlighted the cultural importance of the event that integrates all who make books possible — readers, writers, booksellers, editors, designers, proofreaders, librarians, communicators, government entities.

The ambassador of the European Union, Katja Afheldt, spoke of the honor to be chosen for the 24th international book fair, especially after two years of being suspended in its present form. She spoke of book fairs as spaces for reading, culture and education, when social networks and services that offer audiovisual content are capturing people’s attention.

The singers Maridalia Hernández and Héctor Aníbal and the National Children’s Choir performed emblematic songs in honor of the European Union and the Dominican Republic on the inaugural evening. Koribe Choir also performed the official theme of FIL 2022, “Hay un libro para tí,” with lyrics and music by Frank Ceara.

FILSD Santo Domingo 2022 opens its doors on Saturday, 23 April, from 9 am to 9pm, with free admission for the public.
